In this product liability trial, a group of children who attended Sky Valley Education Center claimed to have suffered severe neurological issues. Plaintiffs sue Monsanto, asserting that polychlorinated biphenyls, also known as PCBs, were used in the school's light fixtures and caulk throughout the Sky Valley facility. These PCBs, they argue, led to children at the school developing permanent cognitive deficits.
While Monsanto admits that PCBs were used at the school, the company argues that they were not present in levels that would have caused the plaintiffs' significant injuries.
Verdict for plaintiff.
Total damages: $275 million
Including $55 million in compensatory damages and $220 million in punitive damages.
