In Re: PacifiCorp

VERDICT

Trial
02/27/24 – 03/05/24

Summary

This will be the third trial to determine damages stemming from the Labor Day fire.

In the third Labor Day fire trial, 10 plaintiffs suffered damage to their houses after a windstorm in Oregon started fires that raged across the state. Plaintiffs claim that PacifiCorp, an electric utility company, failed to completely deactivate power lines in high-risk areas and failed to appropriately maintain flammable foliage surrounding their lines. This led to hundreds of square miles set ablaze, including many residential neighborhoods and a camp for disabled children.

Defendant PacifiCorp claims they took responsible action, as they shut certain power lines off in anticipation of the storm, but did not want to risk shutting the whole grid down and risk hospitals losing power.

Outcome

Verdict for plaintiffs.
Total damages: $29,183,168.
