Summary
In this healthcare malpractice litigation proceeding, plaintiff James Keith alleged Vascular Institute of Georgia and its employee J. Mark Rheudasil, MD of negligence while performing a carotid endarterectomy on the plaintiff to correct narrowing of the carotid artery caused by the buildup of plaque, due to which the plaintiff suffered a hypoglossal nerve injury that impaired the use of his tongue. According to the plaintiff, the surgeon should not have severed the nerve, and then sutured the nerve together improperly.The defense asserted that severing the artery did not fall below the standard of care because the plaintiff's anatomy was abnormal.
